Rooted and Rising Perspectives: Celebrating Women's History Month with a Collective Showcase of Six Dynamic Female Artists at the Mexican Consulate

Oxnard, CA - In coordination with The Mexican Consulate in Oxnard, the Oxnard Performing Arts Center Corporation (OPAC) is pleased to announce its next visual arts exhibition, Árbol de la Vida, as part of its Gallery Initiative at the Consulate. The exhibit, curated by Rafael Perea de la Cabada, pays homage to Women’s History Month and opens on Thursday, March 7, 2024 with a free reception from 5 to 7 pm. The public is invited to attend.

Translated as "Tree of Life," the show brings together 6 regional artists who express their unique perspectives on the Árbol de la Vida through a range of mediums including painting, printmaking, embroidery, drawing, digital art, and weaving. Their works speak to themes of growth, strength, and interconnectedness and weave a layered narrative of womanhood, resilience, and empowerment.

Featured artists within the exhibition include:

  • Dalia Garcia

  • Benita Martinez Sos

  • Gabriela Santos Ramos

  • Maricruz Sibaja

  • Rima Villareal

  • Helen Yanez

The exhibition will be on view from March 8 - May 10, 2024. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm.

On April 4th there will be a free Art Talk + Performance with Dr. Jennie Luna, Associate Professor: Chicana/o Studies at California State University - Channel Islands. Doors for the Art Talk will be at 5:30 pm with the event taking place from 6-7:30pm. Dr. Luna’s research focuses on the contemporary history of Danza Mexica/Azteca tradition and its impact on Xicana Indígena identity formation. As a danzante for over twenty years, Dr. Luna presents an ethnographic perspective and addresses the diaspora of Danza in the U.S.

The Mexican Consulate Gallery is a project of OPAC made possible thanks to support from the California Arts Council, the National Association of Latino Arts & Culture (NALAC), and the Port of Hueneme.
